essay, u jelly?

Some folks in the good old Grosse Pointe seem to think that projects lack the ability to teach kids. Their idea of modern learning is to sit in class reading, writing and taking tests. Their way is boring, lacks imagination and is incapable of producing lasting memories. Projects, however, are entertaining (especially if a person messes up.), require imaginational input for success, provide for personal expression and produce memories that last until a human is either 93, dead, or receives Alzheimer’s. So projects do have a use in the classroom (at least for students.)
First is the entertainment. Projects are the source of multiple types of entertainment. The foremost kind is working on the project. The mere idea of working with other people is a kind of ecstasy for certain percents of the population. There are also the laughs from some poor simpleton making a mistake and catching hell from the teacher. There is nothing more entertaining than a kid crying as a professor vents a spleen on him or her. Then final kind is watching the presentations. The presentations can be dry and boring, a hilarious failure or an informative presentation with comedy mixed in here or there. The last one is the best. But entertainment is not alone as a reward (?) from a project.
Next up at plate is imagination. Any project (yes, even this one.) requires imagination. How else can a human come up with a script for a movie, or a backdrop for a stop motion project? A project requires a wide range of input. It ranges from minimal imagination (low grade work, level F) to a project that has enough imagination to bring fairy tales to life, or at least make pigs fly. But, imagination is not alone for this department.
Personal expression is also part of the process. More than one writer can come up with the same script, but each is different in some way. Those differences are the personal touch of each writer. The same can go for actors. A group of actors trying out for the same role does the role a little different from the others. In short, personal expression can be fundamental to a project. Sitting in class reading and taking tests are detrimental to the growth of personal expression. To end this, personal expression is a part of a project, all the way to the benefits.
The main benefit is memories. Projects can create memories that last a life time. An example is, early in, some idiot accidently sets fire to the props, causing laughs and outrage from the prop department. This event is pure fiction, any similarities with real life is coincidental and not at all surprising. This example could never happen in regular class unless it was done with the intention of fire. Many memories, both good and bad can and are produced by projects.
In hindsight, or whatever that word is, projects have a use in the classroom. They provide for imagination and personal expression. The project(s) produce memories and entertainment. Furthermore, each project has the student earn their grade through work, instead of mooching off the class nerd. Projects were created for that purpose. Anyone who thinks projects are useless are un American, or republican.

final post: 4-13-11

The project is finally over. The acting is over, and the editing is almost complete. all that is left is to shut down the facebook page, recycle the script and complete an essay. The essay is supposed to be a response to a parent who thinks this project is a waste of time. I think Mr. P made the whole idea up to keep us busy over the break. Anyways, I have to go now. see ya.
